Ron

Editorial By Ron Conlon:

Wintertime is our time to repair our cars and prepare for the 2007 season.  A couple of events have happened that appear here and are documented.  Our Chapter of FLU and club is now 8 years old and although spread thinly across 4 states, that seems more a strength than otherwise but also invites and needs local events like coffee or a technical help session among small groups.  I am helping Jim Chandler disassemble a wrecked 79 Spider and am getting my hands and head around areas that were unknown to me.  So ask questions and request help or parts through the club and someone will step forward.   Our executive officers are president, Steve Wood (1 year remaining), treasurer Jim Wagner (2) and secretary Ken Dickson (also website manager)  (3).  Steve and Ken are from St. Louis and Jim is from Wichita.  We change one member each year.  Mike Greer has been our FLU representative and Ron Conlon does the newsletter.   Every member is invited to be involved as they wish to host events, submit to the newsletter or whatever. We want to hear from you and to feel a part of something even if you are the only Fiat in 200 miles and I know a few like this. Our big event is MOFLO and the dates are June 8-10 in Osage Beach MO at the Scottish Inn.  Get your reservations early so we control the motel as usual. FLU has Fiat Freakout 07 in the Detroit area on the July 27-29 weekend and we are going in a loosely organized convoy called the Herd of Cats Tour - see FLU or Mirafiori event websites.  More events are below.
Ron's Winter Project:
This winter project was to freshen my interior.  I bought the Spider in 1999 with a decent velour look interior that has worn over the years and wasn't the original tan leatherette.  So I installed new seats and panels from a 79 parts car and cleaned up some old electrical fixes.  I found that 3 radios had been installed in the past and every one was wired differently with the old harness stuffed deeper into the dash.  The Spider came with original radio and speaker wiring but this strangely was never touched.  I did a lot of work to hide some dash cracks but they are reappearing.  I now have a courtesy light that welcomes any door opening though provides little in the way of real illumination.  I replaced all the door and window felts/seals and that has removed many years from the overall feel of the car.  A new windshield topped things off.  I drove to Missouri last year for the glass and discovered that local shops would install one for what I paid and they stock them so shop wisely.  I submitted the project to Classic Motorsports Magazine and it was written up.  Giving good press about these Italian cars will never hurt and mine has been a joy to own.

Ron Takes a Spider to the Gulf Coast:

Last year my brother, Doug from Ottawa Canada, bought Jim Hannon's very fresh fully restored Pininfarina Spider and drove it home.  It has since been in cold storage until the spring thaw.  So to warm him up and go on a long discussed junket, he flew into Norman and we packed the Spider and headed south. We drove about 2000 miles in two weeks through Austin and Surfside, Texas.  The spider was perfect and thoroughly impressed this ex-MG owner who now has a better idea of what is sitting in his garage.  Imagine, he stated, if he had not bought the Pinin how he would feel as he drove through the pretty back highways of Texas with the twin cam purring and top down. The weather held up just as well and we rented a beach house.  Side trips were made to Galveston and we stopped in Austin both going and returning.  We plan to meet up with spiders in Detroit for FFO-07.

Vick Autosport at TWS

Our friends at Vick A utosport ran some cars at Texas World Speedway on March 9th and send us some pictures.  Csaba states that the cars were good and ran reliably but the drivers wellÉ Our club is always welcome to join them at trackside and view racing from the inside.

Hallett Raceway BBQ

On April 1, 2007 a small group gathered at Hallett Raceway near Stillwater to catch some vintage racing and tailgate.  Ron was there with Jim Wagner and a new trailer that carried the BBQ supplies.

Hi all, I'm planning on having a BBQ Tech session/ get together here on May 5th. Tech session can be anything or learn how to do something on your cars that you'd like to try. (Wiring, relays, adjustment etc.) Also I have BOXES and BOXES of parts I would like to sort though & find happy homes for, and know what some of them fit, (most is what ever Allen was driving). Smile... And I really would like to have space back in shop to do more playing. Send a note or call to let me know if coming and what you might want to do in a Tech session...Hopefully weather will be nice and everyone will enjoy the drive.
