Ozarks update

What do you call it when a Lancia follows a Fiat into the Ozarks?

An Extravaganza!

2001 marks the second annual event where Fiats and Lancias venture into the Ozarks of Missouri to meet other enthusiasts and see other fine cars. For a number of years there have been events on either coast, but up until 2000 there was no Fiat/Lancia event in the mid-west. The first of what is hoped to be an annual event took place in Osage Beach, MO last summer with nine enthusiasts and four Fiat spiders in attendance. The event, although still in it's infancy, is attracting a much larger crowd this, it's second, year.

This event is an informal gathering of enthusiasts mostly from the mid-west. There is no official registration and no entry fees, just show up and enjoy the activities. The event for 2001 is scheduled for June 15, 16 and 17. The unofficial hotel is the Scottish Inn, of Osage Beach, MO. Although this is an informal gathering, we do have some planned activities and a rough agenda, just to let you know what to expect the agenda is as follows:

Friday June 15 arrivals into the Osage Beach area, check-in at the Scottish Inn or other hotel of your choice, or camp at a near by campground (Lake of the Ozarks State Park). We will assemble in small to medium sized groups to go to dinner. This is not a prepaid event so you can find other folks that have your same tastes and form your own group or sneak off with your significant other for a romantic dinner. Afterwards, meet in the parking lot and clean off some of those bugs that hit during the drive and meet any newcomers.

Saturday June 16 a casual morning, more arrivals, debug that beautiful Italian metal, some bs and maybe a tech session from a well respected Fiat Freak. We will head to the State Park just prior to lunch; there is a shelter that has been reserved for our group. There will be a cookout for lunch so bring something to slap on the grill and your own refreshments. After lunch we plan a Concorso D'Eleganza so that people can look at all the other fine cars that show up. This is also an informal event, no registration and no judges or prizes, at least not yet. Depending on the turn out there may be time for a 'round the lake drive or just more bs before dinner, which will again be groups on their own. We will however, meet again after dinner for the second annual Fiat/Lancia go-kart runoffs. This was a tradition that started last year and seems to have struck a nerve with the group. Participation could be limited but it will be fun for all I'm sure.

Sunday June 17 a casual early morning, either a tech session or a drive around the lake, this really depends on what we were able to work in on Saturday. A casual get together to review the weekend's activities and make some plans for 2002. This is your chance to speak out on what activities you would like to see included or new locations we could visit. We will finish with a run for benzenna and departures around noon. This will get most folks home at a decent time on Sunday evening.

For more information you can contact Matt Ludwig at: fiatmatt@yahoo.com or 785-312-2977. For those interested in staying at the Scottish Inn of Osage Beach the phone number for reservations is: (573) 348-3123, mention you are with the Fiat group and you will receive a 10% discount off the normal rate. We have not blocked rooms so if you prefer other accommodations that is up to you. We will however, utilize the parking lot of the Scottish Inn as a gathering place as many will have rooms there.

We don't really know where this is headed; this is only the second year that we are attempting such an endeavor. The group will more or less determine the direction and the amount of organization that is necessary for us to continue. At present there is no registration, so you can make a last minute decision and make the trip, if the group grows as we hope it will, logistics may require a change at some point. If you live in the area, or just want a chance to get away from it all and see the Ozarks and some other Fiat and Lancia automobiles, this is your chance. Hope to see you there.

Euro Fiesta in Dallas

Six Roamin' Chariots met with the M.A.F.F.I.A. folk in Dallas for a lunch and a showing of cars. The cool weather kept the tops up but did not dampen a warm reception and the good company. Oscar Robinson showed up in his fine Abarth coupe after the 850 Fiat. All the cars drove well there and back. There was a fine mix of Euro cars and the RC's won a few prizes. Thank you to Rodney Haas and other organizers. The three Fiats and Scorpion made a fine sight on I-35

Editorial
The newsletter is now being sent to FLU so that story, that I am certain you are in the process of writing, may get national coverage. We are soon to become a chapter and membership in FLU is recommended but not mandatory. This could be anything from your car history, a trip or technical tip. I do not want to monopolize this letter with only the things that involve me. Most of you know about Mirafiori.com, which is an international forum for Italian cars. Check it out.

The past year has seen the club grow from a BBQ to over 30 members in 5 states. We have a president, Csaba and 2 vp's. There is a major meet planned for the Midwest in the Ozarks and plenty of local activities where two or more get together to do something car related. There seems to be no lack of enthusiasts to conscript. I know of at least 2 other Spiders in Norman that have yet to respond to my inquiries. The variety of cars is also a real treat. Spiders in every color sit with sedans, coupes, X1/9, Lancias, a Multipla, Ferrari, Abarth, Ducati, Alfas etc.
