This is their first MOFLO and we all hope they will return next year. It's good to have different color spiders. This year featured at least three in different shades of "purple".
Ben's story:
Well I FINALLY made MoFlo. Awesome cars, great people, lots of
fun. Already eager to be headed back for next year. Best of all,
put over 600 on the Plum '78, it's first real trip, and just had
a blast (except for being severely sunburnt) Lake of the Ozarks
makes for great scenic driving, no matter where you came from.
Can't wait to do it all again!! Arkie Ben
Added 6/17:
I'm now in northwest Arkansas, Springdale to be exact, moved out
of Tulsa almost 2 years ago and almost fell off the face of the
planet.
My cars:
The one we drove to MoFlo is a stock 1978 124 Spider, Plum, unmodified
(so far). I picked it up from a guy in Bristow OK on May 8th.
Car has 92K miles on it (turned 92 during MoFlo). From tinkering
with the car I have found the following things about it. The mechanical
fuel pump has been bypass and an electric fuel pump is mounted
in the trunk. One ball joint has been replaced. It appears that
the cross member and motor mounts are new, but I'm not sure about
the engine being original to the car. Keep meaning to see how
to check that. The radiator cap is aftermarket. Apparently the
car has been repainted at some point, but in the original color.
Since I've owned it, I had to replace the brake light switch and
emergency flasher switch. Future projects: rebuild the front end,
revive the paint finish, de-smog the engine, work on performance
improvements. I think I'm 4th owner. Car came out of Texas and
is 100% rust-free.
The other choice was an '81 Spider 2000 with FI. We bought this one back in March in Tulsa. It has approx. 75K miles, is gold metallic in color (kinda gold-silver). Aftermarket top, not installed properly, bracing is not looped to top, top leaks everywhere around the edges. Seats are rough (typical splitting). Needs O2 sensor replaced (or counter reset). Sputters occasionally, but drives pretty good. At some point in the past the right hood hinge broke and was welded, discoloring the paint around the weld. It needs the front end rebushed. The brakes are less than optimal, but functional. I like the FI's power, and it shifts very easily. Can track the car back at least 3 previous owners.
My 3rd drivable baby is a white '77. It appears to be pretty much original. I bought it about 3 years ago over the internet. Flew to Nashville, paid $800, drove it home. The interior has been redone and looks good. There are some surface rust issues, a couple of holes in the fenders, a couple of small holes in the floor. I drove it pretty much every day that it was running until I moved here. It came out of Arizona, thru Kentucky to Tennessee and then to Tulsa then here. I am at least the 4th owner that I know of.
Then there's the '78s in Tulsa
(Jenks actually). Bought one locally there when I got back into
Fiats a few years back. Went to Norman OK to pick up the red one.
Had been stripped down and repainted, but needs painting again,
and is in pieces all over the place (but the top is good). The
third one is a blue one in the yard with the other two, same
guy that sold me the green one. Offered to let me put the two
together into one.
Then there's the story of the '69, but that's a whole 'nuther story.
